Career and Technical Education

Policy: The Alaska Workforce Investment Board (AWIB) is the policy oversight board for career and technical education in Alaska under the federal Workforce Investment Act. The AWIB coordinates closely with the Department of Education and Early Development in this role.

The AWIB has developed a statement of principles and strategies to guide development of vocational and technical education in the state. The full title is Alaska’s Future Workforce Strategic Policies and Investment Blueprint, but it is generally known simply as “The Blueprint”.

Additionally, in its oversight role, the AWIB has adopted several statements to support Tech Prep and seamless transitions for Alaskans. The Principals of Tech Prep is the foundation statement for Tech Prep in the State, while Seamless Education for Alaskans emphasizes the need to foster standards and connections so that transitions are smooth.

Information about Career and Technical Education in Alaska - The Department of Education and Early Development maintains the most comprehensive website for information on all topics relating to CTE in Alaska. It is a good starting place for any CTE related question or issue, including Tech Prep.

Vocational Training in Alaska - The state’s Eligible Training Provider List as well as reports that describe training programs and record their performance all can be accessed on the DOLWD's Research and Analysis section website. For detailed information about a program in these documents, contact the school or provider directly.

Career Guidance – The Research and Analysis Section also provides information for and oversees the state’s Career Information Guidance System, AKCIS. This web-based program can be accessed at any of the state’s job centers, and at most school systems in the state.

Alaska Vocational Technical Center – Under Governor Murkowski, AVTEC, the state’s postsecondary vocational technical school headquartered in Seward, became an integral part of the Department of Labor & Workforce Development. To find out more about the variety of career training opportunities available at AVTEC, see the AVTEC website.
