Labor Appoints Southcentral, Anchorage/Mat-Su Manager

Thomas Nelson of Eagle River has been selected as the Anchorage/Mat-Su Employment Security Operations Manager and manager of the Anchorage Job Center, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development announced today. 

Prior to accepting his post, Nelson was the Anchorage veterans' team supervisor for the department. 

"Tom is exceptionally qualified and experienced for this job," said Employment Security Director Ron Hull. "We are very fortunate to have a person of his caliber managing job services in this large region."

Originally from Kearns, Utah, Nelson joined the Army after high school. Initially assigned as an infantryman, he moved on to administrative and personnel management. Nelson is certified as a Turkish linguist, has lived and worked in the Republic of South Korea; Frankfurt, Germany; Izmir and Ankara, Turkey; and did tours of duty with NATO, including a manpower and personnel management position at the Pentagon on General Colin Powell's Joint Staff. 

Nelson has an MS degree in administration from Central Michigan University and is currently pursuing a doctorate in education.

Prior to accepting a position with the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Nelson taught school for five years and managed a successful Anchorage business. Nelson lives in Eagle River with his wife, Helen.
