ANCHORAGE -- At a press conference Thursday, Governor Frank H. Murkowski announced the appointment of Mona McAleese as the executive director of the Alaska Workforce Investment Board.

McAleese moves to the AWIB administrative position from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Partner's Project, where she served as project coordinator for the ADA Alaska Region. She has also served as chair of the AWIB evaluation and assessment committee, as a member of the AWIB Youth Council, on the Governor's Committee on Rehabilitation and Employment of People with Disabilities and as member of the Municipality of Anchorage ADA Commission.

The AWIB board, housed within the Department of Labor, provides policy oversight of state and federally funded job training and vocational education programs. The panel reviews employment trends and emerging occupations to ensure that training is customized and Alaskans are prepared for high demand, well-paying jobs.

"Mona McAleese understands the solutions as well as the challenges of providing good jobs in Alaska for Alaskans," said the governor. "The board and the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development share a commitment to advance employment opportunities for Alaskans and Mona McAleese strengthens our commitment to those specific goals."
