No. 05-13

ANCHORAGE – Some of the nation’s most advanced high-tech security equipment will be displayed in Anchorage later this month as more than 30 state, federal and military organizations join forces for a job fair on careers in homeland security, public safety and emergency preparedness.

The Public Safety Industry Job Expo will be held on Wednesday, September 29, sponsored by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development at the Anchorage Job Center/Muldoon, 1251 Muldoon Road. The job expo will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. For information call Larry Yerich in Anchorage at 907.269.0071.

Labor Commissioner Greg O’Claray said the current national focus on homeland security should encourage interest and turnout for the job expo. This will be the first job fair held by the labor department with a specific focus on public safety careers.

O’Claray added, “With heightened interest in homeland security, this is an optimum time to assist Alaska employers in identifying and hiring qualified Alaskans for careers in related fields.”

Thomas W. Nelson, director of the department’s Division of Employment Security, said that participation in the job expo has been confirmed by all five U.S. military services and the Alaska Army and Air National Guard and Reserve units.

Alaska law enforcement and public safety agencies joining the job expo will include the Alaska State Troopers, University of Alaska Police, Juneau Police Department and the Municipality of Anchorage Police, Fire, and Parks and Recreation units.

Participating state departments will include Public Safety, Corrections, Military and Veterans Affairs, Law, Administration, and Transportation and Public Facilities, along with employment specialists from Labor’s employment security division.

Federal career specialists will represent the U.S. Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Participating private-sector employers will include the NANA and Doyon regional Native corporations, Securitas Security Agency, Guardian Security, Loomis Fargo, Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Fred Meyer and the Costco Loss Prevention unit.

Nelson said the Anchorage Police Department K9 and SWAT units will be on hand and he expects that the Anchorage Fire Department will display some of its emergency services equipment. The state troopers’ K-9 Unit will also be present, and the division’s A-STAR high-altitude search and rescue helicopter, snow machines, four-wheelers and new trooper motorcycles will be displayed.

The US Coast Guard will display a homeland security safety boat, the U.S. Army is scheduled to display a HumVee and possibly a Stryker vehicle, and Loomis Fargo will have an armored car on display.
