Labor Commissioner Okays $2 Million Grant For Distance Learning In Seward

No. 05-20

JUNEAU – Alaska Labor Commissioner Greg O’Claray this week signed an agreement implementing a $2 million federal grant to fund a distance learning facility at the Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) in Seward.

The commissioner said the grant was the result of efforts by Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski and was included in a $21.8 million investment grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to boost development and job growth. AVTEC is in the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

O’Claray said, “Distant learning technology will help Alaskans qualify for employment opportunities all over the state. Distance learning connects instructors and students electronically so they need not be together in a classroom.”

The commissioner added, “With this funding and Governor Frank Murkowski’s leadership we have forged an outstanding team effort with our congressional delegation and the White House.”

O’Claray has directed division directors and senior department staff to maintain close oversight of the AVTEC project, “to make sure qualified Alaska contractors and vendors have an opportunity to participate in building and providing equipment for the technology center.”

The commissioner said contractors and vendors may secure additional information about the project from AVTEC Director Fred Esposito at 907.224.4159 or online at the AVTEC website: http://avtec.edu
