Pathways Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Eligible for Funding? - School districts, individual schools or homeschool programs are eligible to receive funding from the Division Of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) for implementing Pathways-School to Career projects to enhance and expand transition activities for students with disabilities. Any DVR funds remaining after the costs of the project have been recovered should be used to expand and enhance transition services for students with disabilities.

Can teachers be paid directly? Teachers can become Teacher Vendors for DVR and be paid directly for implementing Pathways-School to Career activities only as an after-school activity.

Contact jim.kreatschman@alaska.gov to inquire how your school or a teacher can become a vendor for DVR's Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS). Information on other Pre-ETS activities DVR pays teachers to facilitate is available at Transition Tools for Teachers.

What is "reimbursement for services"? - DVR-funded activities are always done as a reimbursement after an approved project is completed. DVR has a long history of reimbursing funds to schools and teachers for implementing its other Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) like Summer Work and JOBZ Club.

Teacher qualifications - While Career and Technical Education (CTE) staff are preferred for this project DVR recognizes this is not always possible. Teachers with recognized credentials or journeyman level qualifications in an occupation other than teaching can also submit a proposal for project funding. Likewise, the involvement of local artisans or subsistence mentors is encouraged for projects focused on subsistence skills.

How does this whole process work?

  1. Teacher submits Your Pathways Project Outline with a budget for supplies to DVR's Youth Transition Coordinator at: jim.kreatschman@alaska.gov
  2. Jim Kreatschman will contact you with approval of your project or to gather additional information needed for approval.
  3. Teacher returns DVR/DETS "Request for Pre-Employment Transition Services" for each student with a disability. Form provided upon project approval.
  4. Jim will issue an Authorization for Purchase (AFP). The AFP is DVR's version of a purchase order. This authorizes you to bill DVR for the Pathways-School to Career services you provide.
  5. Teacher conducts their project activities.
  6. Teacher or school submits one invoice along with Pathways S tudent /Teacher Surveys to jim.kreatschman@alaska.gov (provided upon project approval)

Who do I call for help or if I have questions - DVR's Youth Transition Coordinator is available to help you through the whole proposal process. Contact: Jim.kreatschman@alaska.gov or call (907) 465-6931.
