Former Tax Chief Accepts Employment Security Deputy Director Position

Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development commissioner Ed Flanagan announced today the promotion of Susan Solberg to Deputy Director of the Employment Security Division.

Citing her 30 years of state experience, 21 with Labor, Flanagan said, "I'm confident with her experience and management capabilities, Sue will be a great help to the division in fulfilling its statutory requirements, getting people jobs, paying unemployment benefits, and training Alaska's work force."

Solberg formerly served as Chief of Tax for the division where she was responsible for overseeing a staff of 40 employees and for collecting over four million dollars a year in employer contributions to the state's Unemployment Insurance (UI) trust fund. As Chief of Tax, Sue initiated significant innovations to revenue collection that shifted the image of an autocratic "tax agency" into a customer service organization, highly rated by Alaska's employer community.

The Employment Security Division is the largest division in Labor charged with promoting employment and economic stability by administering the employment services, job training, and unemployment insurance programs. The programs collectively impact over 25 percent of Alaska's labor force each year by providing a network of 22 job centers throughout the state, paying approximately $115 million in worker benefits, and getting thousands of workers their first, next or best job through training and workforce preparedness.
