Voc. Rehab. Employee/Division Receive National Advocacy Award

James Beck, program manager with the Alaska Division of Vocational RehabilitationThe National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) presented James Beck, program manager with the Alaska Division of Vocational Rehabilitation with its Region X Advocacy Award, the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development announced today.

NCIL recognized Mr. Beck "for his dedication to promoting and protecting the rights of all people with disabilities and the advancement of the Independent Living philosophy throughout Region X." Region X consists of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

NCIL also awarded the Labor Department's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) a Region X Advocacy Award for its commitment to advance the rights of people with disabilities throughout Region X. Honoring Alaska DVR represents the first time in its history NCIL has given an award to a state rehabilitation agency.

"We are very gratified by this award because it demonstrates that, in the view of those who work with these programs nationally, Alaska is doing a very good job," said DVR director Duane French.

The National Council on Independent Living is a membership organization that advances the independent living philosophy and advocates for the human rights of, and services for, people with disabilities to further their full integration and participation in society.
