2002 Traveling Seafood Workforce Program Under Way

Workers are needed immediately in the Bristol Bay area to work for the next three weeks at shore-based salmon canneries. This past weekend the Naknek/King Salmon and Dillingham areas have been slammed with fish and processors are desperately needed to start this week.

Pedersen Point, Dillingham, Togiak, and Egegik have immediate openings for at least 40 seafood workers, according to the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (Labor).

When processors complete their contracts in the bay area, they will be eligible to participate in Labor's traveling seafood workforce program. "The Traveling Seafood Workforce concept works throughout the year as fisheries seasons progress," said Pennelope Goforth, DOL's State Seafood Employment Coordinator. "It represents a truly public-private sector partnership and thrives on the teamwork of workers, seafood employers, and the Alaska Job Center Network."

To move workers after the critical Bristol Bay salmon season, a temporary seafood employment office in Naknek is open until July 12, 2002, at the Bristol Bay Borough Building, 1 Main Street. The hours are 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (907-246-7373). The employment center will help supply workers to other areas of Alaska where needed, such as Cordova, where the North Pacific Processors plant has requested 35 workers following the run. Groups of workers in the Naknek area interested in continuing on to other processing work after layoff, should contact the Seafood Employment Office in Naknek. Workers must have completed their work contracts in Bristol Bay before they can participate in the program.

Seafood companies interested in hiring these experienced workers can work directly with Labor's Seafood Employment Specialists during the peak of the salmon-processing season. Seafood employers who need workers in mid-July and August may contact the Seafood Employment Unit liaison staff now at (907) 465-5955 or toll free in Alaska 1-800-473-0699.
