Labor And Workforce Development Grants Permanent Variance To Alyeska Pipeline Service Company

Sep. 9, 2002
No. 02-47

In accordance with AS 18.60.077, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development has granted a permanent variance from safety and health standards prescribed in 29 CFR 1910.179(b)(6)(i) to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company.

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company requested a permanent variance to allow them to operate a bridge crane with less than 2 inches of lateral clearance from an obstruction. The bridge crane in Pump Station 1 has a 1.5-inch clearance from a wall separating the boiler room and the shop. This area of restricted clearance is more than eight feet above grade level and is inaccessible to personnel.

The Labor Department granted the permanent variance because it is satisfied that Alyeska Pipeline Service Company's restricted workspace and the specific conditions set out in the variance will ensure worker protection that is at least as safe and healthful as that required by the standard.

A copy of the Grant of Permanent Variance is available upon request from the Division of Labor Standards and Safety, Department of Labor and Workforce Development,
P. O. Box 111149, Juneau, AK 99811-1149, or by calling Lillian Prevette in Juneau at (907) 465-6005.
