Largest commercial seafood season gearing up

Seafood industry employers are gearing up for the state's largest commercial pollock "A" season. The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development is informing interested workers to apply now at any of its 23 Alaska Job Centers located around the state.

Many companies are recruiting this fall for the winter groundfish season, which typically employs hundreds of seafood workers starting in mid-January in the Bering Sea area, lasting through early April.
"I am looking for workers who are reliable, follow through, and enjoy working with others as part of a team. They also need to be able to stand for long hours and perform repetitive tasks," said Candace Tietge, Alaska Recruiter for Westward Seafoods of Dutch Harbor.

Experienced seafood workers who are residents of any of Western Alaska's six Community Development Quota areas are especially urged to apply for these jobs. Companies generally provide room and board and round trip transportation upon completion of contract. Jobs are located at shore-based plants and on large at-sea processing vessels.

Interested applicants should contact an Alaska Job Center nearest them, or go to the Alaska Department of Labor's "Seafood Jobs In Alaska," at jobs.alaska.gov, click on "Seafood Jobs", then "Current Openings" for processing jobs by location with recruitment schedules. Workers in rural Alaska can call toll-free 1-800-473-0688 for recruitment information.

Seafood workers can also go directly to the Anchorage Midtown Job Center, 3301 Eagle Street, Room 101, or call the Anchorage Seafood Hotline at (907) 269-4770, extension seven (7), for updated seafood orientation schedules.
