Labor Department Launches Progressive Business Outreach Campaign

Feb. 20, 2003
No. 03-06

The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development has launched a cutting-edge outreach campaign to inform business about the cost-effective and timesaving recruiting, hiring and placement services provided through the Alaska Job Center Network, Commissioner Greg O'Claray announced today.

The five-month campaign is part of a nationwide pilot designed to increase awareness and usage of the state's network of job center services, which provide employers with free-of-charge information and assistance in locating qualified job applicants.

"The campaign is part of our efforts to develop Alaska's economy by helping businesses operate more efficiently," said O'Claray.

Seven states (Alaska, Iowa, Kentucky, Montana, Missouri, New Hampshire, and Washington) are involved in the pilot funded by a special grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.

O'Claray said that business services at the Alaska Job Centers are "the most comprehensive resource we've ever provided Alaska employers," citing the job centers' ability to quickly and cost-effectively help employers hire workers from a broad pool of local applicants.

"We consider this a tremendous opportunity to get the word out to Alaska's employers about the services we offer to help them recruit and hire qualified workers," said O'Claray. "Our business customers have told us we need to market our services, but we did not have the financial resources to do so without being selected for this special project."

The theme of the informational campaign is "Super Heroes," referring to the business service representatives at select Alaska Job Centers who provide personal assistance to employers through their specialized knowledge of the local employment market. In addition to helping businesses find and pre-screen job candidates, representatives assist businesses in understanding regulations and how to take advantage of tax credits.

The Alaska Job Center Network has the largest database of job seekers in the state. Through the Alaska Job Center Network website www.alaskaemployer.com, employers can also find a wealth of local economic data, wage trends, and other helpful business management information.

Over the next five months, employers in target areas of the state will receive more information through innovative outreach tactics about how the Alaska Job Center Network can meet their recruiting and hiring needs. Employers interested in obtaining additional information about special business services available through the Alaska Job Center Network are urged to contact one of the 22 job centers statewide, log on to www.alaskaemployer.com, or call (907) 465-2712 for an Alaska Job Center nearest them.
