Our Alaska” Television Newsmagazine Explores Job Opportunities For Alaskans

Dec. 16, 2003
No. 04-22

JUNEAU – The next edition of “Our Alaska,” a public affairs television newsmagazine produced by the office of Governor Frank H. Murkowski, will provide a “day in the life of” look at the employment placement services offered employers and job seekers at locations of the Alaska Job Center Network.

The edition of “Our Alaska” detailing the services offered by the Alaska Job Center Network will be broadcast at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19 and repeated in several Alaska communities at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21. The statewide “Our Alaska” broadcast schedule is attached.

The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development administers 23 Job Center Network locations statewide. The centers, supervised by the Division of Employment Security, provide job placement support for the Murkowski administration’s Alaska hire initiative to encourage 90 percent or higher resident hire throughout Alaska.

Friday’s half-hour production includes interviews with job applicants intended to highlight state job services that are effective, “as well as helping us strengthen and update those services where we can do a better job,” according to Labor Commissioner Greg O’Claray.

Several placement specialists are featured in the program along with a variety of resident Alaska job seekers. These include a retired military officer exploring new civilian careers, an empty-nest housewife hoping to return to the professional health care workforce and a physically impaired former rancher hoping to redirect his energies to fish and game conservation issues.

O’Claray interviews several job seekers, asking each to describe the ideal career path he or she hopes to pursue and to discuss the emotional support, as well as the payroll rewards that come with meaningful and satisfying employment.

The Alaska Job Center Network includes four Anchorage offices serving the Midtown, Eagle River, Muldoon and Gambell areas.

Other centers are located in Barrow, Dillingham, serving the Bristol Bay region; Delta Junction, Fairbanks, Glennallen, Homer, Juneau, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Wasilla, serving the Mat-Su area; Nome, Kenai, serving the Kenai Peninsula; Petersburg, Seward, Sitka, Tok, Valdez and the Bethel center serving the Yukon-Kuskokwin Delta.
