Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation

Jan. 23, 2003
No. 02-78

JUNEAU - The Department of Labor and Workforce Development (AKDOL) is mailing notices to Alaskans who qualify for unemployment benefits under the Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program.

TEUC is a federal program that allows individuals who have exhausted their regular state and extended unemployment benefits to receive 13 additional weeks of unemployment insurance benefits. The benefits program was extended by an act of Congress in early January. The extension means Alaskans already receiving TEUC will see no break in benefits. Other eligible individuals can continue to establish TEUC claims until May 31, 2003, and receive TEUC benefits until they exhaust their entitlement or until August 30, 2003, whichever comes first.

"Extension of the Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation program is good news for Alaskans," said Commissioner of Labor Greg O'Claray. "Approximately 1,600 Alaskans who were receiving benefits under this program on December 28 will continue to receive benefits without interruption. This extension will also allow other Alaskans who have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits and extended benefits to apply for assistance under TEUC."

AKDOL is currently sending notification to Alaskans identified as potentially eligible to continue receiving benefits under the TEUC program. Questions regarding Alaska's Unemployment Insurance program and the TEUC can be directed to Bill Kramer, Assistant Director, Unemployment Insurance, Department of Labor and Workforce Development, at (907) 465-5927 or via email at Bill_Kramer@labor.state.ak.us
