Alaska Department Of Labor Renews Alaska Employment Preference Determination

Jun. 10, 2019
No. 19-15

JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Dr. Tamika L. Ledbetter issued a determination that 23 occupational categories shall be eligible for a 90 percent Alaska resident hire preference on state-funded construction projects. The determination becomes effective July 1, 2019, and expires on June 30, 2021, and is based on data compiled by the department's Research and Analysis Section. The resident hire preference determination applies on a state-wide basis when Alaska's unemployment rate is at least 10 percent higher than the national rate. In order for a work classification to qualify for preference, there must be enough unemployed qualified Alaska residents to fill at least 10 percent of the jobs and at least 10 percent of the jobs must be filled by non-resident workers.

The 90 percent Alaska resident hire preference applies on a project-by-project, craft-by-craft basis, and must be met each work week by contractors and subcontractors. Contractors seeking additional information should contact the nearest Wage and Hour regional office:
