Reciprocity

8 AAC 90.111 allows Alaska to reciprocate licenses from other states. Below are the lists of states that we reciprocate licenses from and the names of the out-of-state licenses we accept.

For all reciprocity, you must currently hold and have held your license for a full year prior to applying. In your application materials you must submit evidence of this one year period, which may require a copy of a previous license or a letter from the state indicating that you have held this license for the full year. This requirement also applies to Provisional Certificate of Fitness, but we are able to issue a Provisional COF even when the state’s license does not qualify for reciprocity.

If you have evidence to show that this list contains errors, please email MI@ALASKA.GOV and we’ll make corrections to the list. Our general requirements are that the state requires some kind of apprenticeship, requires approximately 4 years or 8,000 hours of OJT training, and requires the applicant to pass a test.

If you are attempting to reciprocate from a local jurisdiction in a state that does not issue a license, we will need to review this on a case-by-case basis. Please submit documentation that shows the requirements for the local jurisdiction in which you hold a license. Please allow extra time for processing, as we’ll need to contact the jurisdiction to verify.

Reciprocity applies to Plumber Journeyman and Electrician Journeyman trade licenses. Other specialty licenses vary too widely from state to state for us to reliably reciprocate. In states where a Master is required to have held a Journey-level license, we may also reciprocate the Master license. If your state allows alternate paths to the Master, then we may not accept it. Alaska does not have a Master Plumbing or Master Electrician certificate.
