State Launches New Online System For Unemployment Insurance Tax Accounting

No. 04-34

JUNEAU – Technicians in the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development
have completed a three-year project to install a new computer system that is processing unemployment insurance quarterly tax reports more quickly and with fewer errors.

Direct online access to the program website is at labor.alaska.gov/estax/home.htm .

Officials in the Division of Employment Security said they would also expand the system by early September with additional services including Internet processing of fund transfers and electronic enrollment for new employers.

The integrated system replaces an outdated unemployment insurance tax system the labor department inherited from the state of Louisiana in 1982.

Labor Commissioner Greg O’Claray said the integrated system is technically complex. “It required hundreds of hours to install, trouble-shoot and boot up and we are proud of the teamwork that brought this project to reality.”

Employment Security Director Thomas Nelson said workers began using the new system on January 20. He added, “Initial reports and feedback from employers using the website confirm that the system is reducing costs of processing and compliance and improving speed and accuracy of data transfer.”
