March 28, 2025
No. 25-5
JUNEAU, Alaska — February’s statewide job count was up by 5,200, or 1.6 percent, from February 2024.
Construction added 1,000 jobs over the year, boosted by North Slope oil and gas projects and some off-season federally funded infrastructure projects. Those projects also spurred growth in professional and business services (400) and transportation, warehousing and utilities (1,100). Oil and gas employment was up by 600 but still about 1,500 below January 2020.
Health care’s strong growth continued, adding 1,400 jobs since last February.
Most industries added jobs, but seafood processing disruptions drove manufacturing losses (-500). Retail and financial activities each lost 100 jobs over the year and the information sector was flat.
Federal government was up by 100 jobs and state government by 500. Local government remained flat. It's too early for any federal job cuts to show up in these estimates.
Alaska’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 4.7 percent and the U.S rate ticked up slightly, from 4.0 percent in January to 4.1 percent in February.
